Organisers have cancelled a pro-Jeremy Corbyn rally in the capital due to “overwhelming demand”.

Thousands were set to go to the #KeepCorbyn demonstration at trades union hub Congress House in Bloomsbury, central London.

The event, organised by left-wing pressure group Momentum, was due to host speakers including John McDonnell, Fire Brigades’ Union general secretary Matt Wrack and Mr Corbyn himself.

But in a tweet the group wrote: “Due to overwhelming demand for tonight’s event in Congress House we have to postpone. Look out for future updates & thanks for your support.”

Organisers had said the rally was in protest at the “deeply undemocratic attempt to topple” Mr Corbyn, who has faced mounting calls to quit amid a string of dramatic shadow cabinet resignations over his leadership.

Earlier this week supporters gathered in Parliament Square for a similar event arranged by the same group as part of the #KeepCorbyn movement.
