Tories demand Night Czar Amy Lamé takes bi-partisan approach after offensive tweets

Twitter storm: Amy Lamé

The leaders of six Tory boroughs in London today urged new Night Czar Amy Lamé to take a bi-partisan approach to supporting the capital’s 24-hour economy.

The Conservative chiefs said the Labour-supporting comedian, appointed by Sadiq Khan earlier this month, must put her “political bias” displayed in a series of offensive tweets to one side.

Ms Lame, who described Tory members as “scum” on Twitter, labelled George Osborne a “c***” and accused David Cameron of using his dead son as a “pawn”, has been accused of being overly political.

Her appointment, made through a personal service company which critics claim could help her avoid paying tax, is to be investigated this week by a City Hall oversight committee.

In their letter, the leaders of Westminster, Wandsworth, Bexley, Kensington & Chelsea, Hillingdon and Kingston councils said the Night Czar had made her political views “very clear”.

They wrote: “We are therefore writing to seek reassurance that you will approach your important new role in a bipartisan way and work constructively with Conservative councils.

“We ask that you put your political bias to one side and set out how you will work with all councils to promote and protect Greater London’s night time economy.”

The capital’s 24-hour economy is worth more than £25 billion a year and directly supports one in eight jobs, many of them in Tory-run Westminster.

A City Hall spokesman said: “We are confident that Amy will have an excellent relationship with councillors from all political parties.”
