Winston Churchill: Bugger off and leave me in peace

Nicholas Soames MP recounted one of his earliest memories of his grandfather, Sir Winston Churchill, at the launch of the Churchill Archive Online of Churchill’s writing and private papers (more than 800,000 pages), at the Bloomsbury Institute.

He sneaked past various secretaries who were on guard and slipped into his bedroom to find the great war leader in bed reading a newspaper.

“Is it true you’re the greatest living man, Granddad?” the young Soames asked.

“Yes. Now bugger off and leave me in peace,” Sir Winston replied.
