Two quit in protest at Blue Plaque cuts

English heritage chief executive Simon Thurley said of the famous and much loved Blue Plaque scheme in February: “I can tell you from the horse’s mouth the scheme is not closing down.” However, today two Blue Plaque Panel members, Dr Celina Fox and Margaret Pelling, have resigned in protest at the need to make efficiency savings to the scheme.

“As a result of the cut in Government grant which will be announced this week, English Heritage will need to respond with a further programme of savings,” says an English Heritage spokesman. “This sum comes on top of the 38 per cent savings we have had to make since 2010. Although the Blue Plaque scheme has never been at risk of closure, it had become necessary to scale back the activity and deal with a backlog of plaques ready for erection. We have decided to transfer the scheme to the new charity announced last week to secure the future of the National Heritage Collection.”
