‘The Shriek’ is silent over Damian McBride’s damning claims

27 September 2013

With Damian McBride dishing fresh dirt on the skulduggery that went on during the Labour government, the former PM Gordon Brown needs all the friends he can get. So where, pray, is Baroness Vadera, the woman once known as his “representative on earth”?

Vadera, a former investment banker who was made a life peer in 2007, was one of Brown’s closest allies, tirelessly defending him during her eight years at the Treasury. Business leaders adored her ability to shakes things up in Whitehall, while grumbling civil servants dubbed her Shriti the Shriek.

The baroness was instrumental in helping Brown craft the banking rescue package that saved the country from a financial meltdown. Could she once again fly to Labour’s aid, to battle against the stories of politicians’ “drug use, spousal abuse, alcoholism and extra-marital affairs” that McBride is dragging out of the closet?

Sadly there has been no word from Brown’s former protégé. Vadera stepped down from government in 2009, and she no longer takes part in parliamentary proceedings in the Lords, after taking a leave of absence in 2011. She now works in financial consultancy.
