First Dame Maggie Smith lets slip on American television that she hasn’t watched a single episode of Downton Abbey. Now Laura Carmichael says she loves being the plainest of the Downton Abbey sisters.

In an interview with Love magazine, she says she and Sophie McShera, who plays the kitchen maid Daisy, think it’s so funny “that people worry that we cry ourselves to sleep at night because we’re not playing the hot one. But I don’t mind. It must be hard to start your career with everyone going on about how gorgeous you are. To be in that bracket most be so pressurised.” Luckily she only has the pressures of fame, talent and popularity to contend with.
