Not many dead - or the Ashcroft millions

Is it really news, as reported by yesterday’s Sunday Times, that Lord Ashcroft wants to give away half of his estimated £1.2 billion fortune?

In his 2005 book Dirty Politics Dirty Times, the Tory peer suggested he would give away much more, writing: “More than 80 per cent of my assets — and I never discuss how much I am worth — will be left to a charitable foundation in my name. My family will be trustees so that they can enjoy spending money on worthy causes in my name. The balance of my assets will be left to my family."
