The cosy side-by-side seating of Ken Clarke and Baroness Williams on the Question Time panel last night prompted an illuminating exchange between the pair. “You don’t often sit together,” said David Dimbleby as the political heavyweights were having their microphones attached in Rochdale before the show began. “We’re in coalition,” responded Ken, before adding: “It’s more credible in the case of Shirley and me than some of our colleagues.”

Shirl the Pearl agreed. “We always come out with joint statements on things like Europe,” she said. Clarke, whose pro-Europe stance is being smothered ahead of the Tory conference for fear of giving Ukip ammunition, smiled weakly.
