Cut out for champagne

Sophie Matisse, glamorous great-grandaughter of the artist Henri, swept into Tate Modern yesterday for a morning preview of the Matisse cut-outs show, which opens on Thursday.

Sophie, a contemporary artist based in New York, doesn’t feel overshadowed by great-grandpa Henri. “We didn’t talk about Matisse so much. He was like the great purple elephant in the room,” she explains.

She does, however, know how to have a good time. After discussing the exhibition with the press, she asked the Tate’s minders: “OK, is it time for champagne now?”
