Veteran broadcaster Sue MacGregor has lent her backing to BBC chairman Lord Patten. The former presenter of the Today programme was among guests at Riba last night for the Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction, which was awarded to Wade Davis for his book Into the Silence.

“John Humphrys’s interview [with George Entwistle] was one of the most devastatingly brilliant I had heard,” she told the Londoner. “The BBC has had worse crises, and will inevitably get over this one. But it is deeply upsetting. It is like a very dear relative going temporarily off their head. I’m very supporting of Chris Patten and his political strengths will be beneficial to the BBC. He has a tough role to hold.”
