Hundreds of naked cyclists are set to bring central London to a standstill this weekend for a protest against car culture and oil dependency.

Riders will bare all as they pedal past major London landmarks including Big Ben and Piccadilly Circus for the London stage of the World Naked Bike Ride.

Six start points around the capital will set the brave cyclists off on nine-mile routes converging at Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner by about 5pm.

The annual event has taken place in London since 2004, according to organisers, who say the demonstration aims to highlight the vulnerability of cyclists as road users while protesting against car dependency.

In previous years hordes of riders, many in brightly coloured body paint, have turned heads as they pedalled around the city.

Advice for this year's participants has been posted by organisers on the international event’s website, which warns: “Do not undress until just before the protest moves off, as this will undermine our positive relationship with the authorities.

“There is no law against nudity in Britain, but please don't exercise your right to nudity in London before the ride, as it will impact on our ability to make arrangements with police.”

Organisers also caution: “It's a really good idea to take your clothes with you on the ride.

“Make sure they are secured though. You don't want to be the person who lost their clothes on the ride or the one whose friends decided the ride was taking too long, they had better things to do and went home with your clothes.”
