A "rambling" John Inverdale was tonight slated by tennis fans for talking through points as Andy Murray took on Nick Kyrgios in the fourth round of Wimbledon.

Users on Twitter asked "Is there a mute John Inverdale button" as he joined John McEnroe in the commentary box for the Centre Court tie.

One fan watching the BBC coverage from home described the presenter's remarks as "codswallop".

Another pithily observed: "Nick Kyrgios has given up. I wish John Inverdale would."

At one point the search term "John Inverdale" was among the top ten UK trends as hundreds of users commented on his presenting style.

However, not all were so scathing.

Scot Murray roared to victory in straight sets in the short match, earning a place in the quarter finals where he will meet Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
