The wife of hero MP Tobias Ellwood today paid tribute to her husband for his valiant effort to save the life of PC Keith Palmer.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, London-based lawyer Hannah Ellwood said “I’m proud of him”.

Prime Minister Theresa May also paid tribute to the Foreign office minister last night, phoning to thank him personally for performing mouth-to-mouth resusitation on Mr Palmer.

Mr Ellwood, a former British Army captain who served in Bosnia, told the Times he tried to save his life but he “had been stabbed too may times”.

Hannah Ellwood said she is proud of her husband's efforts to save the dying police officer

He said: “I was on the scene and as soon as I realised what was going on I headed towards it. I tried to stem the flow of blood and give mouth-to-mouth while waiting for the medics to arrive but I think he had lost too much blood. He had multiple wounds, under the arm and in the back.”

After paramedics took over he stayed at the scene to help - knelt on his knees by Mr Palmer’s side.

The father-of-two lost his brother Jonathan in the 2002 Bali bombing - an attack in which 202 people died.

Tony Davis, a coach for the British boxing team the British Lionhearts, was visiting Parliament with students from the Hammersmith Boxing Academy when the attack happened.

Friends told how he jumped over a fence and tried to revive Pc Palmer moments after seeing him stabbed with two knives.

Mr Davis was later seen being comforted by police officers as he wore a bloodied team tee shirt.

He later tweeted: “Today was supposed to be a good day at House of Commons, but it weren’t!! I am so sorry for the policeman I tried to help. RIP God Bless.
