A seven-year-old boy demanded answers from London mayor Sadiq Khan as he visited the scene of the Grenfell Tower blaze.

Kai Ramos, who was sat on the shoulders of a friend or relative, confronted Mr Khan asking: “How many children died? What are you going to do about it?”

The youngster could be heard directing questions towards the Mayor as he spoke to the press after spending time with those affected by the devastating blaze which left at least 17 people dead.

Mr Khan turned to address him and asked him his name.

They shook hands as Kai, who was with his mother Jade, asked: “How many children died?”

The Mayor replied: "The bad news is I'm afraid, lots of people died in this fire, there were very brave firefighters and police and ambulance workers.

"They are going through the building now, that's why it takes time you see. I know it's very sad because you might have a friend in there."

Kai asked again: “What are you going to do about it? What are you going to do with people’s lives? They’ve lost their homes.”

Mr Khan added: “We need to make sure they have somewhere to live but we’re going to do that. I know it’s upsetting and I know you’re angry but we’ll get those answers.”

The Mayor was heckled by frustrated crowds who swarmed around him during the visit but he told reporters he shared their anger.

He said: “Understandably the residents are angry and concerned and have genuine questions that demand answers."

As he spoke, a woman shouted: "Someone needs to be accountable. These deaths could have been prevented".

He added he welcomed Theresa May’s call for a public inquiry and agreed with the woman saying: “We need answers now.”

The Mayor has called for an interim report to be published this summer and for the public inquiry to examine whether the block was refurbished safely.

Mr Khan praised the “amazing” response of the community.

The mayor’s speech at the scene of the fire was delayed after a “disturbance” which led to one man being taken away from the scene by police.
