Unemployment in London rises to 384,000

Unemployment in London has jumped by 30,000, official figures reveal.

The capital saw the biggest rise in the number of people out of work in the three months to February. A total of 384,000 people were unemployed in the three-month period. The jobless rate increased to 8.9 per cent, the third sharpest rise in the country.

Ministers said the rise in unemployment was predominantly due to a 34,000 drop in the number of “economically inactive” people. More women in particular are seeking work and welfare changes mean more people who had been on incapacity benefit are now being assessed as able to work.

Nationwide, unemployment has increased by 70,000 to 2.56 million, with rises among young people and those out of work for more than a year.
