Forecasters have issued another weather warning as temperatures plummet below freezing in London.

It comes after the capital experienced its largest snowfall for nearly five years on Sunday, causing widespread travel disruption.

On Sunday night temperatures are expected to drop to -2C in London, with a yellow weather warning in place from 4am on Monday across a large swathe of central England and Wales.

In the UK some rural areas could see the mercury drop as low as -10C or -12C, the Met Office said.

This could cause treacherous driving conditions at the start of the working week, with "widespread slippery, icy conditions" and some "tricky conditions" on the roads and pavements.

Forecaster Oli Claydon told the Standard: “The worst of the snow has pushed through now, it is starting to weaken and it will turn into showers.

“That will be largely the end of it however rain will come through from the south-east overnight and tomorrow that could turn into snow in places.

“Temperatures will also fall again overnight and an ice warning is in place from 4am on Monday until 11am.”

UK becomes a winter wonderland as snow falls

He said, with snow flurries fading, most places across the country will wake up to a "bright sunny morning".

Pete Williams, the RAC's road safety spokesman, said they are expecting 11,000 breakdowns on Monday, a figure which is 20 per cent above the seasonal norm.

"I think the big thing is people are not going to leave enough time," he said.

"Journeys will take two to three times longer. It's going to be treacherous driving conditions."

He said low overnight temperatures could cause black ice and urged people to drive slowly, leaving plenty of space between them and the car in front.

Highways England said ahead of the heavy snowfall and in preparation for the overnight freeze, they have been working to keep motorways and major A-roads clear of snow and ice.

The Government-owned company said thousands of tonnes of salt has been spread on the M5, M6, M40, M42, M69, and the A5 and A49, with gritting crews also targeting the M1.

Mr Claydon said the biggest accumulation of snow on Sunday was seen in Sennybridge in Wales where 32cm (12.5 inches) fell.

This was followed by Hereford with 18cm (seven inches) and High Wycombe, just north-west of London, saw 17cm (6.6 inches).

In the capital, the weather caused significant disruption to the train and Tube networks while London airports experienced delayed and cancelled flights.

Passengers at Heathrow in particular described chaotic scenes, describing the situation at the airport as “outrageous” and an “absolute disgrace”.
