Tweet success: Street party campaigners celebrate their triumph over council threat

A threat to axe an annual street party in north London has been silenced after the organiser’s Twitter followers bombarded the local council with messages.

Organiser Jon Levy invited his 18,000 Twitter followers to “tell the council what they thought” after a noise officer responded to a complaint by warning him this year’s party could be the last.

Scores of online followers, who attended an annual Summershow party held outside Foto8 photojournalism gallery in Finsbury, sent messages to Islington council’s Twitter account.

Mr Levy, 44, co-director at the gallery, said: “Twitter was the means to force the issue to the top of their agenda. There were a lot of people who liked this event enough to want to make their voices heard.

“The council called up and promised to have a meeting with me if I could tell them to stop.”

In the meeting with Mr Levy, Islington council backed future street parties and events.
