Tributes were paid today to a young motorcyclist killed when his bike hit a parked car in south-east London.

Ashley Lait, 20, died after he came off his motorcycle at 5am on Sunday yards from his home in Maylands Drive, Sidcup.

Mr Lait, a former student at the town’s Hurstmere School, was pronounced dead at the scene after neighbours rushed from their homes to try and save him.

His devastated long-term girlfriend Anastasia Stuart posted a photo of the couple together saying: “Rest in perfect peace handsome, will love you forever and always baby.”

Friends have paid tribute to “one of the nicest people you could hope to meet.”

Friend Lauren Bacon said: “It’s heartbreaking. We are all in shock. He was a lovely, caring guy. He was always thinking of other people and would always put others before himself.

“I’d seen him on Thursday, he was just his bubbly normal self, happy and funny. His family are just devastated.”

Another friend told the Standard: “I grew up with him. He was a lovely guy with a heart of gold. You won’t hear a bad word said about him. He loved motorcycling and always rode safely.”

Mr Lait, who lived at home with his parents, was the second youngest of four siblings with two sisters and an elder brother.

Yesterday dozens of floral tributes were tied to five bollards at the scene by loved ones.

A witness who lives close to the crash told how neighbours cradled Mr Lait before emergency services arrived.

He told the Standard: “People rushed outside and were doing everything they could for him and holding on to him before paramedics arrived so he wasn’t alone.”

Detectives from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit based in Catford are investigating the crash.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “There were no other parties involved in the collision and there have been no arrests.”

Witnesses or anyone with information are asked to contact them on 020 8285 1574.
