Rush-hour commuters on the central line told of their "devastation" as they faced a year of closures at Tottenham Court Road Tube station.

On their first day back at work today, passengers were faced with the realisation that Central Line trains will not stop there until December.

The Central Line platform is closed so Transport for London can continue to increase the station's capacity.

But workers travelling into town were left confused and dismayed by the disruption today.

Maddie Taylor tweeted: "Forgot Tottenham Court Road tube station was shut for a year. I feel like 2015 isn't off to a good start."

Vanessa Josifovska echoed her misery: "Not feeling too good today with 3hrs sleep :( To make things worse Central line doesnt stop at TCR anymore."

Others meanwhile expressed delight that Tottenham Court Road would not see any Central Line passengers for a year.

Amy Browning wrote on Twitter: "OMG Tottenham Court Road is a DELIGHT thanks to no central line! Keep it closed I say."

The work will see the station have increased passenger capacity with eight escalators, five lifts, improved lighting and CCTV and art installaitons.

TfL is advising Central Line passengers to use Oxford Circus and Holborn stations during the work.

David Waboso CBE, London Underground's capital programmes director, apologised for the "inconvenience" the works will cause but added they are necessary amid the arrival of Crossrail in 2018.

He said earlier this week: "Tottenham Court Road station is already a major West End destination and when TfL-run Crossrail arrives the number of customers using the station will increase to around 200,000 a day.

"We're transforming the station to make it fully accessible for customers, with improvements including new entrances and an enlarged ticket hall."
