A woman has been left seriously injured after being stuck by a route 131 bus near Tooting Broadway Tube station on Friday afternoon.

The collision took place on Tooting High Street shortly after noon, close to the Northern line Tube station.

The pedestrian has been left with “potentially life-threatening or life-changing” head injuries.

The Air Ambulance and London Ambulance Service were called to the scene.

The major road has been closed in both directions while police respond to the scene, while Garrett Lane, which connects Tooting to Earlsfield, has been reduced to one lane westbound.

Eleven bus routes have been placed on diversion:  the 44, 57, 77, 131, 155, 219, 264, 270, 280, 493 and G1.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “The impact to traffic is serious with congestion on all approaches and the footpaths are also closed at scene with pedestrians and cyclists having to seek alternative routes.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "Our first medics arrived on scene in around three minutes.

“We treated a woman at the scene for a head injury and took her to a major trauma centre as a priority.”
