The Mall Walthamstow fire: Aerial footage reveals catastrophic damage after east London shopping centre blaze

This shocking aerial footage shows the catastrophic damage caused when a huge blaze erupted at an east London shopping centre.

Around 150 firefighters battled the fire at The Mall in Walthamstow on Monday to stop it wreaking complete destruction.

It destroyed more than half of the roof of the two-storey building, while part of the first floor was also damaged.

Footage shot by the London Fire Brigade as crews tackled the inferno from the sky shows the smouldering remains of a large part of the roof.

The Brigade said they were called at around 7.40am on Monday to Selborne Walk, with 25 fire engines sent to the scene.

Images and videos posted on social media showed smoke billowing into the air as flames consumed part of the building.

Labour MP Stella Creasy, the local MP, praised the “massive effort” from emergency services as it was brought under control as of 12.18pm.

She said on Monday afternoon: “We have to now see what the damage now is... you could see that the roof had gone on big chunks of it, even from a distance, so that doesn't bode well.”

Some of the businesses based inside the building includes Clarks, Asda, Boots, The Body Shop, River Island, Lidl, Waterstones and TK Maxx.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
