An estimated one million people descended on central London on Saturday brandishing colourful placards and marching in their thousands in support of a People's Vote.

Protesters donned Brexit badges, blue and yellow outfits and flew EU flags as they gathered on Park Lane on Saturday.

Staggering footage showed massive crowds of demonstrators making their way from Hyde Park Corner towards Parliament around lunchtime.

The "Put It To The People March" takes place today on what was supposed to be six days before the UK was due to leave the EU, before an extension to the departure date was given.

The size of the crowd saw people spill over into the capital's side streets and some underground trains were not stopping at Green Park station, as the crowd of demonstrators stretched from Hyde Park down to Piccadilly.

Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable, Green MP Caroline Lucas and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan all joined the march.

Mariella Frostrup and Richard Bacon, who hosted a rally in Parliament Square, claimed that an initial count of demonstrators shows that the amount of people taking part topped one million.

Independent Group MP Chuka Umunna also tweeted that an estimated one million had attended the march.

Dogs were also seen supporting the cause, sporting an array of pro-EU jumpers.

In Parliament Square, Labour's deputy leader Tom Watson was expected to tell marchers the only way to resolve the Brexit impasse is "for people themselves to sign it off".

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, former deputy prime minister Lord Heseltine and London mayor Sadiq Khan were also expected to take the stage.

Other speakers included former Conservative cabinet minister Justine Greening and ex-attorney general Dominic Grieve, former Tory turned independent MP Anna Soubry, Lib Dem deputy leader Jo Swinson, Green Party MP Caroline Lucas and SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford.
