A deadly "zombie killer" knife has been seized less than a week after tough new laws clamping down on them come into force.

The terrifying machete-style knife was snatched by officers in the Met Police’s taskforce in Islington on Tuesday evening.

One man was arrested by officers on suspicion of possessing the outlawed knife and for suspected drug offences.

On August 18 new legislation came into force banning the “horrific” weapons as part of a government crackdown - with sellers of the blades set to face jail terms if they are caught.

The horror film-inspired knives can often be up to two feet in length and are becoming increasingly popular with teenage gang members. Available online for as little as £10, the weapons are often advertised as collectors’ items.

The amendment to the Criminal Justice Act 1988 prohibits the sale, manufacture, rental or importation of zombie knives.

The ban means those caught making or selling the items could face up to four years in prison.
