A toddler died on the way to hospital after being hit by a car while crossing a road near a busy roundabout in west London.

The three-year-old boy was knocked down in Lowther Road, a cul-de-sac of warehouses and semi-detached homes in Stanmore, at 5.51pm on Thursday.

Paramedics from the London Air Ambulance administered first aid at the scene before the child was driven to hospital.

He was pronounced dead in the back of the ambulance 40 minutes after the crash happened. Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow is less than three miles away from the scene.

The female driver of the car stopped at the scene, a few hundred yards from Queensbury Tube station, and has not been arrested.

A London ambulance paramedic tweeted: “It’s difficult to see someone taken at a young age and there’s nothing you can actually do. Traumatic end to another difficult day.”

The child’s next of kin have been informed. A post-mortem examination will be held in due course.

Detectives from the Roads and Transport Policing Command are investigating and would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the collision or the moments leading up to it.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the witness appeal line at Alperton Traffic Garage on 020 8991 9555.
