An elderly woman died after she was hit by a lorry in a busy shopping street in west London today.

Shoppers looked on in horror as the 85-year-old pedestrian was killed when she was hit by the HGV in Southall.

Paramedics battled to save her but she was pronounced dead at the scene at The Broadway.

Emergency services were called to the crash at the junction with Herbert Road at 11.05am.

London’s Air Ambulance was also scrambled to the scene.

On Twitter, witnesses described seeing a huge police cordon in place and a large emergency services presence in the area.

One user Puja K said: “The whole of broadway is sealed off, police everywhere. Someone was knocked over by a bus/car and died I've heard.”

Jags Sanghera tweeted: “Serious incident on Southall Broadway - avoid.”

Scotland Yard said the woman’s next of kin have been informed and that the lorry driver stopped at the scene and is assisting police with their enquiries.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We sent an ambulance crew, a single responder in a car, an incident response officer and an emergency responder to the scene alongside London’s Air Ambulance.

"The first of our medics arrived at the scene in under five minutes.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at the Serous Collision Investigation Unit on 020 8991 9555.
