South London housing estate residents campaign to change Channel 4 ident

People living on the Aylesbury estate accuse broadcaster of 'misrepresenting them'

Residents on a south London housing estate are calling on Channel 4 to replace one of its idents which it says casts them in a negative light.

People living on the Aylesbury estate in Walworth, south-east London, are petitioning for the broadcaster to use a new clip which they say represents them more fairly.

They have accused Channel 4 producers of "making the estate look much worse than it is" by adding bags of rubbish to the original filmed scene.

Filmmaker Nick Street created the new ident as part of a documentary project about the Southwark estate, where former Prime Minister Tony Blair made his first speech after being elected in 1997.

On his Vimeo channel he said the film would feature "inspirational stories from Aylesbury as the entire neighbourhood faces demolition and regeneration".

Campaigners are highlighting the issue on Twitter using the hashtag #changetheident.

Writing on an online petition, they said: "Residents living on the Aylesbury estate hate the way their homes are portrayed on the Channel 4 ident.

"The filmmakers who made the ident bought in the bags of rubbish, the shopping trolley, washing lines and added in the satellite dishes, making the estate look much worse that it is.

"Creation Trust and filmmaker Nick Street have remade the ident, with none of these embellishments but featuring lots of people who actually live here.

"Please watch our version and sign the petition if you would like Channel 4 to show our ident rather than theirs."

The petition started to attract signatures after an article about it was published on The Guardian yesterday.
