Shepherd’s Bush flooding: Thousands still without water after 'unbelievable' deluge on Goldhawk Road

Thousands of people are still without water after a burst main turned a busy west London street “into a river”.

A stretch of Goldhawk Road and Hammersmith Grove was left submerged by the rupture which struck at 2.46am on Wednesday.

Several shops and businesses were unable to open, with some residents reportedly stranded by the rising floodwater.

Thames Water said an estimated 9,000 properties in the Hammersmith and Fulham borough were left with lower than normal water pressure or no water at all.

Sophia Sinclair tweeted: "Parts of West London have turned into mini rivers!

"The roads near shepherd's Bush market and off #goldhawkroad are shut off. Houses flooded!"

Engineers battled through the day to locate the source of the leak and bring it under control, with Thames Water shipping in bottled water for those left without a supply.

By the evening they had stopped water flowing and supplies were beginning to return to normal.

A spokeswoman for the utilities company said: “We’ve now stopped water flowing from the burst pipe meaning water pressure in our network is gradually increasing and customer supplies will begin returning to normal.

“This will take time as we have to build the pressure up gradually to avoid causing further bursts.

“We’re really sorry to everyone who has been affected today and our customer team will stay in the area throughout the evening and tomorrow supporting anyone who needs help with their water supply or the effects of flooding.

“Getting things back to normal for those people is our top priority.”

Goldhawk Road remains closed and it is not clear when it will reopen.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council has set up an advice centre for residents affected by flooding at Edward Woods Community Centre in Norland Road.

For the latest information, residents should contact Thames Water on 0800 316 9800.
