Redesigned Tube map shows the cheapest pints of beer close to London Underground stations

1/8

There are few more welcome sights for parched and stressed commuters emerging from a hot Underground train in summer than a nearby pub.

Now researchers have provided a handy guide to the best value for money refreshment on offer at the end of a fraught journey.

A list of the cheapest pint at each of the more than 260 pubs closest to the Tube network’s stops was released today.

It has found that the least expensive beer can be supped at Wetherspoon’s New Fairlop Oak pub near Fairlop station in Hainault in north east London, where a pint of Kozel Czech lager costs £1.89.

The cheapest pint in an independent pub is the £2 charged for an unnamed beer at the Coach & Horses, the closest boozer to Hounslow East underground stop.

At the other end of the value scale, the most expensive “cheap” pint was served at the Union Tavern near Westbourne Park where no beer is available for less than the £5.55 charged for a pint of Frontier.

The research, carried out on behalf of the point-of-sale systems supplier StoreKit, also revealed that the most expensive line overall is the Circle where the average price of a cheapest pint in nearby pubs stands at £4.52.

Across the network as a whole the average price is £3.96, while the cheapest line overall is the Metropolitan with the cheapest pint averaging £3.77.

The research also found that the most popular single beer in the pubs closest to Underground lines is the Italian lager Peroni, followed by Fosters, Carlsberg and Camden Hells.

The nearest pub to a Tube station is on average only 0.18 miles away, falling to just 29 metres in zone one. The closest as measured by “entrance to entrance” is the Famous Cock, just 10 ft from Highbury and Islington station.

The most “remote” tube station on the network is Stanmore in north west London, which is 1.3 miles from the Three Wishes.

In zone one Hyde Park Corner in 0.2 miles from the Rose & Crown while in Zone Two White City is 0.4 miles from the Queen’s Tavern.
