Ray Wilkins charged with drink-driving

Drink drive: Wilkins allegedly spent the night in the cells

Ray Wilkins has been charged with drink-driving after appearing at a charity golf event in west London.

The ex-England and Chelsea footballer was driving his Mercedes SL400 when he was pulled over by Met Police officers on Friday around 8pm.

He then allegedly spent the night in the cells of a west London police station before being bailed.

A Met Police spokeswoman said: “Officers from the Met’s Aviation Policing Command arrested a man on suspicion of drink-driving on the Northern Perimeter Road close to Heathrow Airport.

“He was taken to a west London police station and charged as above.”

Wilkins, of Cobham, Surrey, has been bailed to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on July 18.

Wilkins had a distinguished playing career, appearing for Chelsea, Manchester United and AC Milan before going on to manage QPR and Fulham.

In 1993, the 59 year-old was awarded an MBE for services to football.
