These powerful images show the heroes of Grenfell Tower – the brave fire crews who headed into danger to save lives during the inferno.

Two hundred firefighters battled the blaze for around 24 hours before it was finally under control at 1am on Thursday morning leaving the building just a charred shell.

Several crew members suffered minor injuries inside the burning tower as they did their best to lead people to safety.

Photos show exhausted men and women who had worked all day to tackle one of the capital’s worst ever fires.

Some were shown sheltering under riot shields to avoid falling flaming debris from the devastated 24-storey Notting Hill tower.

Commissioner of the London Fire Brigade, Dany Cotton, told Sky News: "My crews that turned up did absolutely sterling work. They got in there, they were very committed, even though the building was alight from top to bottom.

"And they were in fear of their own lives. They were in and out of that building, committing time after time to rescuing the people that we knew were in there.”

Sadiq Khan thanked the crews on Wednesday evening for working ”bravely and tirelessly” in treacherous conditions to rescue as many as they could and finally bring the blaze to an end.
