The British Museum is today launching a smartphone app to help bring its exhibits to life.

The pioneering augmented reality app superimposes text and graphics over objects in the viewfinder. Visitors can learn about the stories behind the exhibits — and even play games to interact with them.

Those who visit the museum’s Parthenon gallery will be able to explore the collection’s history via a game called Gift for Athena.

Chris Michaels, the museum’s head of digital media, said: “The British Museum is committed to finding and providing new ways for visitors to explore our galleries …

“Apps like those produced by Gamar allow a different kind of learning experience.”
