Perfect job for a sleepless singer, starring in Insomnia

22 March 2013

A singer who suffers chronic sleeplessness is to star in a concert titled Insomnia.

Allan Clayton will sing a programme inspired by Benjamin Britten’s Nocturne and featuring other pieces including Vivaldi’s La Notte (The Night) and James MacMillan’s Deep but Dazzling Darkness.

Clayton, 32, of Kensal Rise, said the idea emerged with friends he has known for years in the Aurora Orchestra —artistic director Nicholas Collon and John Harte, the chief executive.

“I don’t get much sleep much of the time and Nick and John have babies about two months old so they’re not getting any,” said Clayton. “I’ve tried all sorts of herbal things, changing diet. Nothing works, even pills.” Tomorrow’s concert is at the London Symphony Orchestra’s St Luke’s venue in the City.
