Our pride, by father of tragic cricketer Tom Maynard

The father of cricketer Tom Maynard has spoken about his pride in his “lovely lad” in his first interview since his son’s death.

Surrey player Maynard, 23, was hit and killed by a Tube train in Wimbledon in June.

His father Matthew said: “We’re just so proud of how he turned out — how he was as a player, how he was as a person, and we always will be.”

He added: “The amount of letters that we’ve had shows how he turned out as a really great bloke. There can be nothing more rewarding for a parent than knowing your lad’s turned out like you hoped them to.”

Figures from the sporting world were among 1,000 mourners who attended Cardiff-born Maynard’s funeral in the city last month. He is believed to have been running away from police who suspected him of drink-driving, and an inquest has been adjourned until next month.

The Tom Maynard Trust, set up in his memory to help the development of disadvantaged cricketers, has its first fundraising event next Tuesday, a bike ride from Cardiff to the Oval just before a memorial match there.
