A popular north London gastropub was today "gutted" by a fire which broke out in its extraction system.

The Victoria Stakes in Muswell Hill was badly damaged after a fire ripped through the building at about midday.

Concerned passers-by reported smoke billowing from around the area around the Victoria Stakes.

Robin Hosking tweeted: "If in Muswell Hill avoid around Victoria Stakes - fire engines, ambulances etc attending a fire near the junction."

Lesley Ramm added: "Absolute chaos at bottom Muswell Hill. Seems VictoriaStakes on fire. Lots of @LondonFire in attendance. Hill closed from Priory Rd."

The London Fire Brigade was called to the pub just before noon today to find parts of the ground and first floor ablaze.

An LFB spokeswoman said: “Part of the ground floor and part of the first floor of the building was damaged by fire.

“All of the ducting to the second floor of the building was gutted by the blaze.”

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.

A statement released by the pub reads: "With a heavy heart we announce Victoria Stakes has suffered a severe fire.

"Thankfully no-one was hurt. Clean up operation starts ASAP."
