Yesterday saw the first of four traffic-free Sundays on Regent Street. No buses, no taxis, no cars - just lots of space for dance and exercise classes, fun, games - and shopping.

The programme of car-free Sundays is called Summer Streets on Regent Street and is inspired by the annual Summer Streets initiative in New York, when some seven miles of Manhattan routes become pedestrian-only. Mayor Boris Johnson said: “I’m delighted that in partnership with The Crown Estate we’re able to pilot this scheme for the first time in the UK. Regent Street is the perfect destination to launch this initiative, which we hope will continue for years to come.

Annie Walker, director of the Regent Street Association, which represents local businesses, said: “This provides a unique opportunity for pedestrians to experience Regent Street at its best, with its wide, open spaces and beautiful architecture, with over 75 flagship stores to explore.”
