More than £11,000 has been raised in memory of a grandfather who died during the Prudential RideLondon cycling event.

Nigel Swanson , 69, set up a fundraising page in order to raise £200 for cancer victims before taking on the 100 mile challenge last Sunday.

But the keen cyclist collapsed from a cardiac arrest near the 60-mile mark in Leith Hill, Surrey, and died despite the efforts of fellow riders and paramedics.

Well-wishers have since flooded to Mr Swanson’s JustGiving page to pay tribute to a “lovely man” and leave donations.

Many of those donating are fellow cyclists who also participated in the annual RideLondon event, which takes place on closed roads.

A separate fundraising page has also been set up to raise money for Mr Swanson’s family, exceeding its target of £2,000.

Charlotte Henderson said she set up the page after cycling past Mr Swanson at the bottom of Leith Hill. “It could have been any one of us and I just wanted to help,” she said.

Mr Swanson’s wife Deborah previously said: “Nigel was a much loved husband, father and grandfather. He was a very experienced cyclist and died doing something he loved.”

His daughter Carey Tonkin, who lives in South Africa, also told the Standard: “It was so unexpected. He was fit and healthy.”
