Dame Margaret Hodge is to conduct a review into the finances of the project to build the Garden Bridge over the Thames, Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced.

The Labour peer will examine whether value for money has been achieved from the taxpayers’ contribution and investigate the work of bodies such as Transport for London and the Greater London Authority going back to when the bridge was first proposed in 2012.

The Mayor’s office said Dame Margaret’s report will be published in full.

The Garden Bridge Trust hopes to start work later this year on building the 366-metre footbridge, containing a garden, from the top of Temple Tube station to the South Bank, to open in 2018.

The organisation estimates that the total cost of the project will be £185 million.
