A 35-year-old man is fighting for his life after being hit by a police van in south London on Tuesday night.

The victim, who was on foot, was hit in London Road, Isleworth, as officers answered a 999 call made in Brentford.

Police said on Wednesday morning he was in a critical condition in hospital.

“At this early stage, it is understood the two officers in the van – driver and operator, both Pcs – were responding to a 999 call in Brentford,” said a Met spokesman.

“The van’s blue lights were in use without sirens.

“However, this will form part of the collision investigation.”

Neither of the officers was hurt.

The Directorate of Professional Standards and the Independent Police Complaints Commission have both been told about the crash, Scotland Yard said.

Bystanders took to Twitter following the collision, which happened just before 11pm.

JustFayeLouise (@Justfayelouise) wrote: “Roads all closed police everywhere outside #isleworth would not let me drive through both sides closed and something lying in road.”

Witnesses are asked to call police on 020 8543 5157.
