Lord’s given go-ahead to build new stand in £200m expansion

The latest phase of a £200 million redevelopment of Lord’s cricket ground has been given the green light.

Westminster council planning committee last night approved changes that will increase capacity to 29,500. They include a new stand and 5,200 retractable seats on match days.

Two seating areas, the Allen Stand built in 1935, and the Sixties-era Tavern Stand, will be demolished and rebuilt. Marylebone Cricket Club hopes work will start in 2020. It is part of a masterplan aimed at “rejuvenating Lord’s and making it world class”.

The Thomas Lord building, a corporate suite in St John’s Wood Road, will be rebuilt — despite neighbours saying its increased height will block light.

The Grade II* listed Pavilion will be refurbished with grander dressing rooms and a gym, a restaurant will open in the Tavern Stand, and part of a pub will be relocated inside the ground.

The relocated Lord’s Tavern will have to call last orders in its beer garden at 8pm, with customers out by 9pm. A plan to use the retractable seating for up to 65 days a year was rejected, and MCC must suggest a smaller figure.

A spokesman said: “MCC is delighted and we look forward to working with Westminster council.”
