Smartphone dating apps and work pressures are causing more Londoners to avoid committing to relationships than singles elsewhere in the UK, according to figures published today.

A survey by website eHarmony found that 27 per cent of respondents from the capital – against the 13 per cent national average – said they felt a “phobia” of committing to one person and were “afraid to settle down”.

A further 10 per cent said they were too busy at work for long-term romance and 16 per cent said worries about rejection made them not want to go steady.

A fifth of London singles surveyed said that being tempted with “lots of options” swiping through dating apps such as Tinder and Badoo made it tougher to stay monogamous.

Researchers questioned 2,005 Britons including 150 male Londoners and 113 female Londoners. Half of the total were aged 18 to 34.
