London commuters faced an icy return to work after the festive break as they woke up to freezing conditions and a widespread frost.

Southern England saw lows of -6.4C overnight - recorded in Benson, South Oxfordshire - as temperatures in and around London fell to 0C.

A yellow weather alert for ice remained in place until 10am, with the Met Office warning some roads could become "hazardous".

Forecaster Greg Dewhurst said there would have been "lots of car-scraping this morning", and added that the country was in store for another chilly day.

He said: "Despite the sunshine across England and Wales it will be quite a cold-feeling day - temperatures will be around 5C or 6C as a maximum."

Mr Dewhurst added temperatures are much milder across northern England, Northern Ireland and northern Scotland, and that the warmest temperatures would be in Scotland - where Aberdeen could reach 11C.
