London is set to be battered by heavy rain and gusty winds as stormy conditions sweep the capital this weekend.

Heavy downpours are forecast for Saturday with up to 30mm of rain expected to fall in places over a period of two to three hours.

Forecasters said low pressure travelling eastwards will bring prolonged periods of rain, strong winds, hail and a risk of thunder.

Temperatures will be around 17C.

A yellow ‘be aware’ warning has been issued for some parts of the south-east including East Sussex, Kent and Medway from 4am until 8pm on Saturday.

On Sunday, conditions should brighten and skies will clear with temperatures expected to reach 19C.

Met Office spokesman Graheme Madge told the Standard: “Tomorrow there are going to be bands of heavy rain across central London and the south-east and a risk of thunder.

“Early on tomorrow morning conditions should be reasonably clear but then as we go through the day into the afternoon and even into the evening there is a risk of heavy showers.

“An area of low pressure travelling eastwards us going to bring the prolonged periods of rain.

“Up to 30mm of rain could fall over a two to three hour period in places.

“Sunday should be a very bright and dry and could stay that way into early next week.”
