London was today enjoying scorching weather as it basked in temperatures higher than Barcelona and Athens.

Thermometers were expected to hit 22C in the capital, almost double the 12C average for this time of year.

The previous 2017 high, 20.9C, was recorded in Scotland this week.

Today’s predictions for both Barcelona and Athens were about 19C.

Met Office forecaster Craig Smell said: “The last time we had similar late-March temperatures in London was 2012.

“We are on course for it to be the hottest day of the year so far.

“It’s a nice way to end the month.”

He said Londoners can expect rain on Saturday, adding: “Right on cue, April 1 will see typical April showers.”

The rain is predicted to clear for the Boat Race on Sunday, leaving sunny spells and temperatures of between 16C and 17C.
