London is set to be drenched by heavy rain in a Bank Holiday Monday washout, forecasters say.

Wet weather and high winds will also create difficult driving conditions for those trudging back from weekend getaways - though conditions should improve as the week progresses.

The Met Office said a band of rain was set to sweep south-eastwards across the UK on Monday.

But the wet weather should "lose some of its oomph" as it reaches London in the afternoon and sunshine will emerge either side of the wet front, said forecaster Steven Keates.

Temperatures in the capital could reach 17C despite the unsettled spell.

And Mr Keates added it was an "improving week weather-wise".

"At the moment, once tomorrow's rain has passed across the south, the rest of the week does look fairly dry," he added.
