Londoners were today hit by a second day of flash floods as torrential downpours soaked the city.

Firefighters were called to nearly 30 incidents of shops, homes and even a cinema being swamped by the heavy rain.

But just 65 miles away in Cambridge revellers were pictured lounging in the summer sun as temperatures rose to 22C.

London areas including Islington, Clapham and Battersea were among the worst affected by the rain, with people sharing photos of disruption caused by the deluge.

As the rain fell, Londoners described being caught in “biblical” storms which sent members of the public darting for shelter and also disrupted public transport.

Covent Garden Tube station was partially closed by flooding and the heavy forced the closure of a platform at London Victoria.

Bus routes around the capital were also put on diversions.

Cars were swallowed by flash floods in Wallington, south London, on Tuesday as freak storms drenched much of the capital.

Three people were rescued from their cars in Manor Road after they were caught in the deluge.

One trapped driver even had to be rescued from his submerged vehicle after members of the public used bricks to smashed the windows to free him.

The incident in Wallington was the most serious of nearly 200 calls received by the London Fire Brigade on Tuesday afternoon.

The London Ambulance Service said one man was checked over at the scene but was not taken to hospital.
