A London bus had the windows of its top deck ripped out in a dramatic crash in east London today.

The Route 106 bus was left with a gaping hole on the side of its top deck while debris from the collision was strewn across the road.

Witnesses said the bus had stopped at a zebra crossing on Cambridge Heath Road when the truck, which belongs to Tower Hamlets council, turned and swung its rear end into it.

An adult in their early 60s and two children under ten were taken to an east London hospital as a precaution but their injuries were not serious.

Mohammed Rashid, a tube driver who was walking to work when he spotted the carnage, told the Standard: “It had just happened as I walked past, the pieces from the bus were scattered in the road. It had been destroyed.

“It looked like the bus had stopped at a crossing and the truck had crashed into it while attempting to turn.

“Luckily there didn’t seem to be any people on board as the bus was only one stop away from terminating. If there were they were probably on the bottom deck.”

A Met police spokesman said officers were calle dout to the collision at 12.10pm.

He added: "We were called to reports of a collision between a bus and a rubbish truck.

"Officers are currently loking at CCTV footage of the accident.

"There have been no arrests."

Tony Akers, TfL's Head of Bus Operations, said: "Just after midday today, a route 106 double deck bus, operated by Arriva, was involved in a collision with a lorry on Cambridge Heath Road at the junction with Three Colts Lane, E2. Emergency services attended the scene. There will be a full investigation into the incident."
