London Bridge terror attack: Timeline of events and how the horror unfolded

Police have confirmed the horrifying events which unfolded at London Bridge on Saturday night were terror attacks.

Details of tonight’s incidents are being pieced together as witnesses describe chaos with people running for their lives and others covered in blood.

The Prime Minister called the events “terrible” and has tonight returned to Downing Street ahead of an emergency Cobra meeting on Sunday morning.

This is the timeline of events we know so far.

  • At 10.08pm on Saturday, police were called to reports of a van hitting pedestrians on London Bridge.
  • The van then continued to nearby Borough Market, where at least three attackers began stabbing people. Witnesses reported several people being stabbed in a pub and Southwark Street.
  • Armed officers sped to the scene and shot the three attackers at about 10.16pm.
  • Six people were killed and 20 injured.
  • At 10.14pm, six minutes after the emergency call, London Ambulance Service paramedics arrived at the scene. The wounded were taken to six hospitals across London.
  • One of the wounded was a British Transport Police officer responding to the incident on the bridge.

  • Police also responded to a separate incident in Vauxhall, which was believed to be a stabbing. It was later revealed that this was not connected to the terror attacks.

  • At just after 12.30am, Prime Minister Theresa May said the “terrible incident” was being treated as a “potential act of terrorism”.
  • Shortly afterwards, police announced that both the London Bridge and Borough Market attacks had been declared as “terrorist incidents” at 12.25am.
  • Scotland Yard confirmed the third incident at Vauxhall was unrelated.
  • Assistant Chief Commissioner Mike Rowley said at 4am six people had died, as he appealed for information.
  • Anyone worried about friends or relatives can call the Met Police Casualty Bureau on 0800 0961 233, Mr Rowley added.
  • On Sunday, the Prime Minister will chair a meeting of the Government’s Cobra emergency committee.
