There were a total of 19,940 live music events in the capital in 2016, according to a study published by IQ Magazine from data compiled by concert website Songkick.
That was more than San Francisco (13,672), Paris (11,248) and Chicago (11,224), as well as world-renowned live music hub Austin, Texas (6,781).
The study saw London finish in third place globally, behind New York, which hosted 28,529 gigs and concerts, and Los Angeles, which came second with 20,843 shows.
Mayor Sadiq Khan hailed the capital’s “world-class” music venues, telling IQ Magazine: “London’s buzzing live music scene is world-renowned, having produced artists from Adele to Ed Sheeran, The Clash to The Rolling Stones.

Mr Khan last year appointed Amy Lamé as the capital’s night czar to act as a champion for venues and the night-time economy in the capital.
The study analysed concert data from 12 major music cities, also finding London had the second most venues (1,780) behind only Los Angeles (2,002).
