Improving London cycling - via Oregon bike ride

24 April 2013

A group of architects are embarking on a transatlantic cycle ride from Oregon to London in a bid to learn lessons on how to make the capital’s roads safer.

Starting in Portland on Saturday, the team of 15 architects aim to complete the 4,500-mile challenge — which will take in sights including the Rocky Mountains, Minneapolis, Chicago, New York, Dublin and Bristol — in 76 days as they stop in each city to conduct research on cycling infrastructure.

They will then present their findings to Boris Johnson when they return in a bid to improve the capital’s provision for cycling. Portland to Portland founder Peter Murray said: “We hope to shed light on how planners in the US seem to be overtaking the UK in terms of accommodating urban cyclists.”
