A hero police officer has said he is sorry he couldn’t do more for the victims of the horrific London Bridge attack after taking on the terrorists armed only with his baton.

The policeman, who joined British Transport Police (BTP) just two years ago, was stabbed in the head, arm and leg during the assault as he reportedly tried to take on all three attackers at once.

He is still seriously unwell in hospital but said he was “overwhelmed” by support from the public, adding: “I was simply doing my job.”

Eight people died and another 48 were injured when the attackers drove a van at pedestrians before stabbing people with knives at Borough Market.

The police officer, whose identity is not known, said: “I am truly moved and overwhelmed by all the support and comments that I’ve received, not only from people in this country but across the world.

“Like every police officer who responded, I was simply doing my job. I didn’t expect the level of love and well wishes I have received.

“I feel like I did what any other person would have done. I want to say sorry to the families that lost their loved ones. I’m so sorry I couldn’t do more and I want you to know I did everything I could.

“I am so proud of my colleagues from BTP and everyone from the other emergency services who were on shift that night and did everything they could in the face of danger. I especially want to thank the officers who saved my life and kept me alive. I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them.

“Saturday night changed my life, like I’m sure it has for many others. My thoughts are with the people who died in the attack, but also with those that were injured and are recovering in hospital, including the three other officers that were injured, and all the members of the public who rushed to help.”

He was one of four officers injured in the terror attack on Saturday night.

An off-duty Met Police officer, named as 25-year-old Charlie Guenigault from Bexley, south-east London, was also left in hospital with serious injuries.

The officer, a keen cricketer, reportedly took on the killers with his bare hands.

Adam Riley, a former team-mate for Kent County Cricket, wrote on Facebook: “It takes courage to run towards the enemy when everyone else is fleeing.

“I’m proud and inspired to have grown up playing cricket with a guy who could be so brave, courageous and selfless in the most terrifying circumstances.

“He is a genuine hero to all of us who know him. Stay strong Charlie Guenigault and get well soon.

“We are all praying for you and the rest of your family in these terrible moments.”
